FAQs

Welcome to the FAQs page. Here, we aim to provide answers to common queries about  osteopathic treatment.

What conditions can osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy can help keep you active and mobile, aid recovery from muscle and joint injuries, contribute to the management of chronic long-term conditions, and treat back, neck and joint pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, tendinopathies, headache, arthritic conditions, sciatica, postural issues and many others.  See additional information links below for further reading.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

During your initial consultation, I'll ask about the pain you have, your medical history, and discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Please bring a list of any medication or supplements you are taking.  Sometimes to examine you I may need you to undress to your underwear, so please wear something appropriate -or bring some shorts if you prefer.

Sometimes I may take your blood pressure & listen to your chest, this is to get a good picture of your overall wellbeing. If you are happy with my suggested plan will we continue to treatment.  I may give you simple exercises or stretches to do in between appointments.

Its really important that you feel comfortable during our appointment so I will ask you at different stages if you are happy to continue.  Please ask me any questions you might have.  This appointment usually takes around an hour but may extend to an hour and a half if complex.

What should I expect from follow-up appointments?

I'll ask you about any changes since your last appointment, re-examine you, suggest how we might proceed & with your consent treat you.  This lets me tweak treatment so that it is appropriate to your stage of recovery. This will be both hands-on and advice/exercise suggestions.  I allow up to 45 mins for this appointment.

How many sessions will it take?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the condition and individual response to treatment.  Generally, 4 to 6 sessions for a responsive patient.  In some circumstances it may be appropriate for you to be referred to another health professional.

Some patients find it useful to book a regular appointment at longer intervals to help manage or prevent a problem from occurring.

How can I book an appointment?

You can easily book an appointment by contacting me by phone or email. If necessary I'll aim to call you back the same day to get you booked in at a convenient time.

You can also send me a text message or WhatsApp with your name and number.

What if I can't get to my appointment?

Please let me know as soon as you can if you are unable to get to your appointment so that we can re-arrange a more suitable time for you.

I request that at least 24 hours notice is given which allows me to book someone else into that time.   Late cancellations require full payment.

Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Osteopathic treatment is typically gentle and non-invasive. Patients may experience some mild discomfort during manual therapy, but it should not be painful.

If a technique is uncomfortable for you please communicate this at the time so that an alternative can be used.  Sometimes the presenting issue is very painful so I would work to minimise your discomfort during treatment.

Everyone varies in how they experience treatment techniques.  Some reaction to treatment such as tiredness/achiness is quite common, please let me know if you have treatment reactions at our next appointment, so that I can keep this to a minimum.

Do I need to be referred by a GP to book an appointment?

No, most patients self-refer.  If you have complex medical conditions then you may feel more comfortable checking with your doctor that osteopathy is appropriate for you before booking in.
